Sacramental Preparation for Children

First Reconciliation & First Holy Communion

Preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion usually occurs when children have reached the age of reason, typically 7 years old, and are in the second grade. Children preparing for the sacraments should be baptized and active participants in religious education classes and at Mass.

Preparing for First Reconciliation

Preparation for Reconciliation, which includes separate parent and children sessions, is held in the fall, and the children's first celebration of the sacrament is usually in November. Church law requires that children receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before their First Holy Communion.

Preparing for First Holy Communion

Preparation for the sacrament of Holy Communion includes separate parent and children sessions and a half-day parent/child retreat. Sessions are held in late/winter spring, and the sacrament of First Holy Communion is celebrated in May.

Registration for Sacramental Preparation Classes

Registration for sacramental preparation classes is held in late summer and early fall.  If you are interested in receiving more information about sacramental preparation, click the Contact Us button to contact our Coordinator of Religious Education.

Do you have an older child in need of First Reconciliation and First Communion?

It is not unusual for children to miss the traditional timing of receiving First Reconciliation and First Communion in 2nd grade.  We routinely work with older children who would like to receive these sacraments.  The process varies depending on the age and circumstances of the child, so click the button below to contact our Coordinator of Religious Education and initiate a conversation about your family's needs.
